Pet Peeve… Not a New Decade

Monday, December 28th, 2009

Jan 1, 2010 does not mark a beginning of a new decade. Jan 1, 2000 did not mark the beginning of a new millennium. 2011 is a new decade. 2001 was a new millennium. 2010 is just the last year of a decade as 2000 was the last year of the millennium. You would think newspapers would get it right and stop the whole best of the past decade thing…

Interstate Mess

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

Okay, I know it has been awhile since I have blogged. That happens once basketball season gets here and I am rarely home. It will probably get better as the season moves on because we have already played over half of the season, but I am a little ticked right now.

I was returning from a conference yesterday evening. I was coming up on exit 23 near Greeneville and I was glad to be getting home because I hadn’t seen my kids for a few days. Exit 23 was in sight, but a little piece of crap truck (with a moron driving no doubt) had a bunch of junk in the back. Well, one of those pieces of junk flew out into the interstate. I didn’t have time to swerve and I clipped the corner of whatever it was (possibly a small engine or lawnmower tire rim). It bent my front driver tire rim, busted the tire, and bounced around underneath the car. I was attempting to get over and make sure nothing was happening right behind me as the thing shot out and went flying back into oncoming traffic before going off the side of the interstate when I noticed the moron stopped on the side of the road.

As I pulled near him, he must have noticed that my car was damaged because the guy sped off before I could get his tag number. Luckily the guys who were with me were a big help in getting my tire changed as I called the THP and Greene County Sheriff’s Office. Candice was at home calling the insurance company.

The guys got my tire changed and we continued to wait for the THP (mind you the truck weigh station is just on the other side of the median and everyone who passes there knows that THP is always there). Finally, I called them back and I preceded to go down the exit and pull of at Zoomerz. Finally the Greene County called and said I could get an report from them. As I was backing out, the THP arrived. Since everything had been taken care of I went ahead and left and took the guys home or to their vehicles and went on to get the report.

This morning we called the insurance claims people. They said it would have to wait until Monday, and my deductible is $250. Luckily I think I am going to be able to get a used rim and new tire for around $125 and just leave the insurance company out of it for now.

If you happen to know who the guy was in the little truck (maybe a small beat up maroon Nissan or something similar as it was dark and hard to tell) let me know.

Book Recommendation

Monday, August 10th, 2009

I want to recommend a book that a good friend of mine wrote about her life and struggles she faced. It is called A Brand New Beginning by Heather Ricker-White. Heather lost her father when she was 6. She then lost her mother during her senior year in high school. Soon after, she lost her grandfather, leaving her with her brother as her only family. Her brother is a student of mine, as well. I got the book this afternoon and I have speed read through most of it. Please buy it and tell others about this book. She lives in Chuckey, TN.

Black Friday Shopping

Friday, November 28th, 2008

Yes, I am one of those people that you may have seen out on the roads this morning before 3 o’clock.  There were some nice deals though.

As many of you may know, I am in the process of having a house built.  This is a long time coming.  We have rented a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom single-wide trailer for the past 3 and a half years.  Our house is set to be a 5 bedroom, 3 bathroom home with a garage and a full basement.  That will certainly be a big change.

Anyhow, I was out a 3 this morning.  My first stop was JC Penney’s.  We went and got in line 15 minutes or so before their 4 AM opening.  I was in line at Sears a little after 4, in the cold, until their 5 AM opening.  We got a 46 inch LCD television and a front-loading washer and dryer combo.  I stood in line there at Sears until a few minutes before 5.  Then, I left my wife there as I went to Lowe’s.  At Lowe’s I bought a stainless-look fridge, over the range microwave, stove, and dishwasher.  Then, my wife did more shopping at Toys-R-Us and the mall while I walked around wishing I could just go to sleep.

I came home and went to bed around noon, and I slept for a nice 4 to 5 hours straight.  Now, I am wide awake thinking I never want to shop again.
